As Pope Francis closes the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica to mark the closing of the jubilee Year of Mercy at the Vatican Nov. 20, so too does the Rockford Diocese end this Extraordinary Jubilee. Keep the spirit of God's mercy alive in your hears and in your performance of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

Oct. 15: Hispanic Day of Mercy in Elgin/15 de octubre: Jubileo de la Misericordia

ELGIN—On Oct. 15, Elgin Community College will be the site of the Rockford Diocese’s Hispanic Day of Mercy.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in ECC’s Spartan gym, 1700 Spartan Dr., there will be a Mass with Bishop David Malloy, reflections on God’s mercy, and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, confessions, music and more.
And, despite the Spanish-language emphasis, anyone in the diocese is welcome to attend this ceremony marking  the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
The prayers offered for the living and the dead will be a Spritual Work of Mercy during the celebration.
Three collections that day will give those who attend a chance to perform Corporal Works of Mercy.
A winter clothing drive will gather coats, scarves, sweaters and socks for Catholic Charities to distribute to the needy in the Rockford Diocese.
Non-perishable foods brought to the ECC gym will be given to parish St. Vincent de Paul Society food pantries, also for local distribution.
A third collection will have an international goal.  Donated sample size personal items (deodorant, toothpaste, soap) and over-the-counter medicines (aspirin, cold and flu remedies, antiseptics, bandages, and oral rehydration salts) will be packaged and sent to the needy in Venezuela.
